SECAUCUS — The NBA Replay Center confirmed Wednesday that a 14-minute review had successfully determined a disputed out-of-bounds call was still “kind of unclear.”
“The process worked exactly as designed,” said a replay official. “We started uncertain, examined every available angle, and achieved a much more thoroughly researched uncertainty.”
The review involved nine cameras, frame-by-frame zoom, multiple consultations, and one image enhanced until the basketball resembled a collection of tan pixels.
Players stood near midcourt stretching, talking, and eventually forgetting which team had originally been awarded possession.
Broadcasters filled the delay by explaining the rule, revising their explanation, disagreeing with themselves, and eventually discussing dinner.
Officials returned to the floor and announced that the original call would stand because evidence was not conclusive enough to overturn something nobody remembered clearly.
The game resumed with 2:11 remaining and noticeably older participants.
