ATLANTA — Following an offseason that added Lu Dort, Aaron Wiggins and rookie Kingston Flemings to a backcourt already featuring CJ McCollum, Dyson Daniels and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, the Hawks have reportedly reached the exciting stage of roster construction where nobody is completely sure who is doing what anymore.
Team officials spent most of Thursday gathered around a giant depth chart, moving magnetic player photos between positions before eventually admitting several guards appeared capable of occupying three spots simultaneously.
“This is called flexibility,” one fictional executive explained while quietly moving the same magnet for the sixth time.
The Hawks insist the new-look era remains fully on schedule, although nobody could locate the actual schedule.
Coaches say the plan is to use Atlanta’s collection of guards to create relentless defensive pressure, multiple ball-handlers and at least four different lineups fans will demand be permanently abandoned after six minutes of preseason basketball.
CJ McCollum reportedly volunteered to provide veteran leadership until someone determines exactly which veterans he is leading.
Atlanta remains optimistic.
“We’ve got options,” said one staffer.
He then stared at the board for another 40 minutes.
