SAN ANTONIO — The Spurs confirmed this week that De’Aaron Fox remains firmly in the starting lineup, citing his speed, experience and the general visual awkwardness of placing a $221 million contract next to the assistant coaches.
Fox is expected to share the floor with San Antonio’s increasingly crowded collection of guards, a group that has left observers wondering exactly how many primary ballhandlers one team can have before the basketball requires a reservation system.
“De’Aaron is our starter,” a Spurs official said. “There are basketball reasons for that. There are also accounting reasons.”
The emergence of younger guards has already produced questions about lineups, touches and long-term roles, though the Spurs insist there is plenty of basketball to go around.
Victor Wembanyama reportedly solved the spacing issue by simply agreeing to occupy all vertical areas above eight feet.
Fox, meanwhile, has been told not to worry about the competition.
Team officials assured him his role remains secure unless another guard becomes faster, younger, cheaper and capable of bending time.
San Antonio emphasized that the situation is not complicated.
They simply have several guards, one ball and approximately $221 million worth of reasons to figure it out.
