Fresh off his first All-Star selection and first All-NBA season, Jalen Johnson arrived at Hawks media day expecting the usual responsibilities of a franchise player and instead found Atlanta apparently ready to hand him the entire organization in physical form.

Team sources say the process began normally, with Johnson receiving the standard compliments about leadership, growth and the future. It escalated when staff members reportedly brought over a giant clipboard, several binders, a symbolic key ring and what one witness described as “roughly 83% of the franchise’s administrative burden.”

Atlanta is entering a new phase built around Johnson, a deeper roster and the post–Trae Young reality that now includes veterans and wings everywhere. The front office has openly praised Johnson’s all-around game, though insiders say the internal enthusiasm may have recently drifted into the area of making him spiritually responsible for offense, defense, culture, community outreach and possibly the first half of the team calendar.

Current Hawks teammates CJ McCollum and Nickeil Alexander-Walker are said to support the move, with several veterans privately thrilled that the organizational spotlight now belongs to someone younger who can accept extra duties without making a noise when standing up from a chair.

Atlanta officials denied that they are overloading their new centerpiece and insisted the handoff was mostly ceremonial. Johnson, meanwhile, reportedly handled the moment well, calmly accepting the praise, the symbolism and the general expectation that he should now know where everything is going at all times.

At press time, the Hawks were considering whether to also let him answer a few cap questions.
