NEW YORK — After waiting 53 years for another championship, the New York Knicks have reportedly celebrated by accomplishing something even rarer: making Madison Square Garden too expensive for the mayor of New York.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani joked that he didn’t have “$2,000 ready for a ticket to the Knicks” banner-raising opener, a statement that immediately reassured ordinary New Yorkers that, yes, the Garden is still financially inaccessible to everyone.
The Knicks recently paused individual ticket sales after acknowledging a pricing error that pushed some seats above $1,000, with the team saying prices would be corrected.
Still, sources inside Madison Square Garden insist the organization remains committed to making championship basketball available to all fans who happen to own a hedge fund.
“We waited five decades for this,” said one fictional Knicks executive while reviewing a seating chart labeled Upper Bowl — Financing Available. “It would be irresponsible not to monetize the emotional damage.”
Mamdani has reportedly begun exploring alternative ways to experience banner night, including watching from outside the arena, borrowing binoculars, or standing on top of Penn Station.
Knicks officials stressed that the championship banner itself will remain visible at no additional charge.
