BROOKLYN — Basketball researchers announced Wednesday that they have developed the first reliable metric for measuring player aura and immediately ranked a reserve guard 11th in the NBA.
The proprietary model, called AURA+, combines tunnel-walk confidence, celebration timing, social-media edits, crowd reaction, posture after made threes, and how often strangers describe a player as “different.”
“Traditional statistics miss a lot,” said the model’s creator. “For example, this player averages nine points, but have you seen the way he checks into games?”
Several superstars ranked lower after penalties for overly practical sneakers, weak postgame quotes, and appearing too interested in ordinary box-score production.
Critics questioned whether aura can be quantified, prompting researchers to release a second chart with more decimal places.
Fans immediately adopted the metric when it supported their favorite players and rejected it as satire whenever it did not.
The reserve guard climbed to ninth after arriving at the arena in sunglasses.
