SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama said he will never endorse a gambling company, briefly creating an awkward silence across an NBA ecosystem currently sponsored by several different ways to lose money during the second quarter.
Wembanyama said he chooses partnerships based on his values and called it sad to see players promote betting platforms. League partners respected the decision before reminding viewers that his next game features boosted odds, live player props and a limited-time offer requiring only a valid email address and several increasingly questionable decisions.
Executives stressed that gambling has no influence on basketball itself, aside from the advertisements before the game, during the game, after the game and occasionally while somebody is attempting a free throw.
Wembanyama reportedly declined multiple lucrative opportunities, telling reporters he would rather attach his name to products he actually believes in.
The NBA described this as an unusual but technically permitted use of personal values.
Broadcast crews have already developed contingency plans for mentioning Wembanyama’s stance, including immediately cutting to an animated graphic showing whether he will record 3.5 blocks.
“He has every right to make that choice,” one fictional marketing executive said. “Obviously we’d feel more comfortable if he made it while standing next to tonight’s official odds partner.”
Wembanyama remains unmoved. The league is reportedly monitoring the situation at +220.
