HOUSTON — An NBA guard earned two free throws Tuesday after successfully drawing a foul from a defender who, according to arena tracking data, was standing in a different ZIP code.
“There was clearly an attempt to contest,” said the crew chief. “Whether the defender physically reached him is only one component of modern contact.”
Replay showed the guard turning a corner, sensing defensive presence somewhere on the weak side, and abruptly launching his upper body backward before the nearest opponent entered the frame.
The whistle came immediately, leading the defender to raise both hands from approximately 22 feet away.
Officials reviewed the play and upheld the call after determining that the defender’s posture suggested he might eventually have approached the shooter.
Analysts praised the guard’s anticipation, body control, and advanced understanding of where contact could theoretically occur.
The league later credited the defender with a personal foul and one long-distance relationship.
