MEMPHIS — A referee issued a technical foul Tuesday after determining that a player’s reaction to a controversial whistle displayed “unnecessary understanding of what just happened.”
The player did not yell, gesture, or approach the official, instead making brief eye contact and nodding in a manner the referee considered unusually informed.
“You can be confused,” the official explained. “You can be frustrated. But once you look at me like you understand the sequence better than I do, we have a problem.”
Teammates immediately pulled the player away despite him remaining completely stationary, following standard protocol for preventing a second technical.
Broadcast replay showed the disputed call from four angles, all of which appeared to strengthen the player’s original facial expression.
League officials later defended the technical, noting that respectful communication requires both parties to maintain plausible uncertainty.
The player declined comment and was warned for appearing to know why.
