NEW YORK — The NBA fined an unnamed player $35,000 after determining that his facial expression following a third-quarter whistle was “potentially sarcastic and therefore detrimental to the league.”
“He did not say anything,” a league spokesperson confirmed. “Unfortunately, the eyebrows were extremely clear.”
Video showed the player staring at an official for approximately 2.8 seconds, blinking once, and producing what investigators classified as a slight but unmistakable corner-of-the-mouth movement.
The league said the punishment was consistent with its commitment to respectful disagreement, which currently permits players to be confused, disappointed, devastated, or spiritually broken, but never amused.
Team officials argued the player may simply have been thinking about something unrelated, though the NBA cited “contextual smirk data” collected from multiple camera angles.
The players’ association is expected to appeal, claiming the expression did not meet the threshold for sarcasm and may have been ordinary disbelief.
The league later issued a memo reminding players that neutral faces remain free of charge.
