MINNEAPOLIS — The Timberwolves have issued a public statement urging fans not to panic after footage emerged of Rudy Gobert practicing three-point shots.
Team officials stressed that the activity occurred in a controlled environment and that no regular-season possessions were harmed.
“We are aware of the video,” Minnesota said. “Rudy remains a center.”
The footage immediately sparked speculation that Gobert may be expanding his offensive game, though coaches cautioned that NBA players frequently practice shots they have absolutely no intention of taking while 18,000 people are watching.
Gobert reportedly made several attempts in succession, causing one assistant coach to quietly review the emergency playbook.
Teammates have been instructed to continue passing him the ball only in previously approved locations, including directly under the rim, very near the rim and accidentally.
Anthony Edwards reportedly welcomed the development, provided Gobert’s new perimeter role does not involve taking one of his shots.
Minnesota said it will continue monitoring the situation.
If Gobert attempts a step-back three during an actual game, the arena has been instructed to evacuate in an orderly fashion.
