LOS ANGELES — A Western Conference team announced Wednesday afternoon that its star player will sit out tonight’s game due to “general awareness of Wednesday.”
“There is no injury,” the team said in a statement. “He is simply experiencing elevated awareness that today is Wednesday and has been for several hours.”
Medical staff said the condition can involve schedule density, hotel fatigue, a mild sense that the season is long, and repeated exposure to the phrase “second night of a back-to-back.”
The player participated in shootaround, moved without limitation, and reportedly looked healthy enough that the team felt strongly he should avoid proving it.
Coaches emphasized that the decision is precautionary and does not indicate concern for Friday, when the player is expected to be reevaluated for possible awareness of Friday.
Fans questioned the diagnosis until learning the opponent was 12 games under .500, at which point many described it as responsible roster management.
The official injury report lists him as OUT — calendar-related.
