TORONTO — The Raptors have officially completed Kawhi Leonard’s return to Toronto by immediately reaching the most authentic possible outcome:
he is not playing.
Leonard sat out Toronto’s first preseason game against Miami while reconditioning, instantly reviving the load-management jokes that defined his first Raptors stint in 2018–19.
Team officials described the development as encouraging.
“We wanted him to feel comfortable,” one fictional Raptors staffer said. “Apparently that meant recreating the exact operating environment.”
Leonard is also unlikely to play in Vancouver against the Clippers, giving Toronto an early opportunity to test the full nostalgic package: Kawhi in Raptors gear, Kawhi around the team, Kawhi absolutely not participating in a basketball game.
Head coach Darko Rajaković explained that Leonard is still building himself back up after a long offseason.
Raptors fans understood immediately.
They have seen this software before.
Toronto’s medical staff reportedly located an old folder marked “2019” and began restoring several legacy settings, including scheduled rest, mysterious availability updates and the phrase “reconditioning” appearing before anyone has played meaningful basketball.
Leonard has said he hopes to play more games this season after reaching 65 last year.
The Raptors support that goal.
They just appear committed to starting slowly.
Very slowly.
Possibly historically slowly.
For now, Kawhi Leonard is officially back in Toronto.
The load management is too.
